Some moons ago, I wrote about people asking me for help. Obviously nobody reads my blog or they just do not take me seriously, because people are still coming up to me for help and advice.
This seriously puzzles me, considering how I don’t think I sound or look that friendly, especially after this hair cut.
Seriously? Do I even look friendly?
I recently got to know some young friends who stumbled upon my * cough * online life and were kinda curious. They were asking me things like how I first started blogging, how I scored an engagement gig and how I get exclusive invites and stuff.
But I managed to sound all smart and inspirational in front of these youngsters and formulated something that could take you to V.I.P. status. Okay fine, maybe not V.I.P., but at least to a place where people take you seriously. (Yong Wei, please pay attention.) Truth is, everyone loves the feeling of being respected and special, and taken seriously.
1. Suit UP!
Fashion Guru at his best.
The great Barney Stinson’s teaching lives on but we know this is Singapore and suiting up in this sunny island may not be the smartest thing to do. So I shall change rule #1 to “dress for the occasion”. Human are very superficial creatures and how you dress up and carry yourself plays a big part in shaping first impressions. Just do a simple social experiment, wear your favorite PJs into a branded shop and see how many of the sales people make an effort to tend to you. Dressing up is not everything, but it does play a very big part.
Side note: I really can’t stand guys who don’t dress up properly on a date while the ladies make an effort to put on make-up, wear nice lingerie, dress and all. I mean your job is not just to say they look good but you should also look good for them as a form of respect, right?
2. Read UP!
You can’t pretend to sound smart if you ain’t smart and the easiest way to be really smart is to be knowledgeable and reading helps with that. Even if you are a true believer of “fake it till you make it”, at least pick up the papers to read the headlines or a book to read its synopsis. That’s enough to make you sound kinda smart, I guess.
3. Meet UP!
To quote the great Don Corleone, better known as “The Godfather”.
Friendship is everything.
Friendship is more than talent.
It is more than the government.
It is almost the equal of family.
How does this work? Your net worth is pretty much your network. Nothing beats meeting people. Knowing the right people for the right things. That’s what connections are about. Which is why I always say, collect favours, not money. Make others owe you favours over money because there are some favours you need to pull at times that just can’t be bought with money.

4. Thumbs UP!
“When life is good? THUMBS UP MAN! When life is bad? BOOO! BOOOO!” Life is seriously too short and we really shouldn’t sweat the small stuff. This is one of the biggest mistakes many make in their lives. Deciding what to eat, where to go, what to do, and what to say.
Instead, life should be about celebrating every small win in life. If you find that meeting people, reading or dressing up in order to feel like a V.I.P is too much of a work….what about feeling like a boss simply with the help of an SMS?
Not too sure what I’m talking about? It is the DBS SMS ‘Q’ system! This may not help you to skip queue into Hai Di Lao or Zouk but it does help you save some timedoing your banking errands and erm, you can spend it queuing at Hai Di Lao maybe?
