National Geographic Channel Singapore Publicity Stunt Fail.

Saw this picture on my Facebook and this picture immediately caught my attention but probably for the wrong reason.

I believe this is part of the publicity stunt to show case their upcoming show Every Singaporean Son.

For those who are unfamiliar, this is the 2nd season after the popular 1st season. And before anyone complains that they are nothing but copycat of ABTM, this awesome online show came first.

But anyway, back to the point, so the stunt allows public to command a platoon of "soldiers" at our CBD area. How is it? Publicity check but are we happy? NO.

Within an hours this was posted on Yahoo, hundreds of comments and shares were generated but apparently none positive.

So on top of the fact that the most of our soldiers already don't take pride of army(base on personnel experience in camp.)  did this publicity stunt just made things worst?

Pride and glory aside, are we even allowed to use Property of SAF for such "showmanship"? And I remember my Encik telling me we can't even book out in "Vest Slack" cause it is not a proper Army uniform like our "Long 4" which is the green camo with long sleeves. Are SAF aware of this publicity stunt?

Mr.Smith, I hate doing IPPT but I will always say the same, I love my army days and this shit is just... SHIT.

"Kar Ji" - actually I'm no Hokkien expert but I believe this is what it is. Got my ankle injured over the weekend during one of the game. I guess old man like me has to slow it down, but damn it. When the adrenaline kicks in you have no clue how old you are.

Mr.Smith, no need to have #PrayForSmith . I'll be back and only better.

We have watched hundreds and thousands of advertisements and those that really leave a mark in our mind will be those that surprised us (or those with hot girls). We might forget the product years later but we will still remember the ad isn't it?

This is one of those that will burn and leave a mark in your brain. DEEP IN YOUR BRAIN.

Anyway Singapore ladies, there's hope!  :x

Mr.Smith, I can haz D cups too.

Are you Singapore Best Blogger?

Best in NBA - Michael Jordan. Best in Golf - Tiger Woods. Best in blogging locally?
This post is inspired by Mrstyleking's recent post where he put himself in a comparison with a few other Singapore blog awards finalist and winners to see where he stand.

In his post, he pointed out a few facts about blog ranking and also highlighted one of the most popular tool that I use for my work to ESTIMATE* a blogger's influential power on the net.

Not only did he openly but also bravely compared his own blog stats with three other bloggers, 2 winners and 1 other finalist of the recent Singapore Blog Awards. In his post he also subtly (or maybe not) injected the fact that he has better readership than all 3 of them. And obviously better than mine considering the fact I've never been the best bath room reading material anyway.

So what makes a blog "best"? What are the judges' criteria since the winners did not have a better readership as compare to other finalist or MrStyleKing himself? Is readership everything? So what if you write good articles but you can't market it or no one is reading it cause your blog is being piled under the other 98612935714 blogs in Singapore? Is content still the king or is marketing yourself more important? Nice pictures or good command of English? What makes you a GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) in the industry? What puts you on the top of the world, shoulder by shoulder with Xiaxue or Mr Brown? Another same but different question, what makes you a popular or famous blogger?

Popularity Vs Fame

I am not an expert when it comes to explaining words especially when it comes to English. (Really, I might fare better in my Cantonese.) To me the simplest way of explaining this is that you can be famous but not popular and at the same time popular but not famous.

Popular simply means people likes you and famous(Fame) basically means people knows you. Quote one of my friend who has nothing to do with the industry at all and asking this purely out of curiousity -

"All your so call famous bloggers friend all I never see or hear before leh. They are like HDB bloggers right? Popular and famous in their own neighbourhood but once they go into a big market nobody knows them. So you sure marketing product with them works?"

Sad to hear but that is the hard truth smack right in most of our faces. I can attend media event and meeting new faces who tells me "Oh, Smith! That Smithankyou right? I've heard about you!" No doubt about such words making me feel all happy but the fact is that nobody knows me when I take the train or bus and in fact every where else. I'm just another Joe isn't it? So how much does Alexa ranking or your 100,000 readership tells regular people about you? Nothing.

So would you prefer to have 1,000,000 knowing you and only 10% likes you or 100 friends who really loves your writing? - Choice.

Have you ever asked yourself this question about who reads your blog? I do. I ask myself all the time like who are these people seriously. I am sure you have Newpaper to fill the slot of trashy writing if you really needed to read some. Why read my blog? What do they want from me and what should I do to be the "Best" in their eyes?

As a Reader. (Those that really enjoy following and reading blogs.)

Blog readers like your blog cause you are interesting. Cause they want a life like yours. They want to be like you and eat the food and watch the movie you watch. They are your reader because of who you are. They are basically your fans. They would really love it when you keep updating your blog. In this case, content is king cause you keep them engaged and that's why they keep coming back for your content or way of writing.

As a Marketing/PR/Brand person.

He or she probably don't really care about what you write as long as you write for his/her product or event. You will be the best if you join their campaigns and blogs for them religiously or even better with a video. They would love it when you don't blog about their competitors and  would love it when you have a good positive image for their clients' product. They care about your numbers(Readership). The more the better and it will be the best if your blog comes with a clean layout that looks professional. They will only read your blog when they invited you for something.

As another Blogger/Friend.

I will read your blog cause I like you as a friend. Cause I bump into you at another event and we probably took some pictures together and you featured me and linked me up. Your blog is best to me cause it's funny and you engaged me as a friend and I wish to know what is happening in your life. Your blog will be the best for me if you are pretty. I am shallow like this but this is my own reading habits. I love beautiful things and beautiful woman. Your blog will be the best to me if you are hot and you show me what I want to see.

As a mass Audience.

They don't know who you are. They don't care who you are. They probably forget about your URL the moment they clicked the cross button. They fall onto your blog all thanks to Google. They probably Google about "Singapore best food", travel or some new gadget. (or in my case, some leaked of nude photos or boyzilian experience.) Basically they want information. Your blog will be "best" if you have all the information. Oh, and don't forget the postal code because it is GPS friendly. They probably leave your blog the moment they get what they were there for.

In conclusion...

I am happy for Mr Style King for his readership and followers count is where it is today considering the fact that his blog is fairly new! I'm actually very jealous impressed with how he get all the invites and concert tickets or what not. Blogging is like showbiz, it doesn't matter how long you are at it or how good you are as luck and "right time right place" plays a very big part. For example like myself, I had my Twitter account for the longest time and only at 1,900 followers and there are some who gets support from thousands of followers over night or in some cases after being in a movie that talks about their non-existent army life.

So what makes your blog the best blog? Is it you? Is it your content? Or is it even how you market yourself and the blog? Is being the best even possible when everyone is "selling" different product? Can we compare apple to banana? In fact the real question here is -

Does it even matter if you are the "best" or not?

Mr.Smith, not popular, not famous, but never mind, as long as I enjoy it and have fun!

*ESTIMATE: I use the word estimate cause I've a few tools I use for work but none of the traffic really says a lot so I choose to use the word estimate.

Me, Myself and my HDB.

Born and raise in an average income family in Singapore, I have never stayed in one of those nice big bungalow like some of my friends but I always thought to myself - if given a chance would I do that?

My buddy Hugh Hefner's Mansion.
We all know it's all cool and posh to stay at a nice big place where it's away from the city where you can enjoy nice view and spacious area for your friends to join you, throw some party and have some crazy nights and all but isn't cleaning or traveling in and out a little trouble?

My buddy Stark's place before it kinda got shot down recently.
And it doesn't really makes a lot of sense if you don't like crowd and not many of your friends drop by no?
My friend Wayne doesn't invite a lot of us over so it's often quiet.
And looking back in my life I've always been living with my family in this small cosy local specialty call HDB and I enjoyed it a lot!

My current place at Punggol!
I've heard some of my friends from overseas calling it a pigeon hole where a family of 4-5 squeeze within but it still gives us enough space and we are always a happy family so it doesn't really matter as long as everyone under the roof is happy right?

I grew up in a 3 room flat at Chai Chee area where I shared a room with my brother. We spent a lot of time together in the room play toys, watch TV and doing our home work(which we try to avoid.) Although we do not have our own rooms, I very much enjoyed the company of my brother especially on nights where we couldn't fall  a sleep.

We shifted into a 4 room flat soon after our younger sister arrived. My brother got his own room while I share my room with my baby sister. This place is the at Tampines where my mum is still staying. I had lot of good memories of that place. It is a very nice place as we have Macdonalds, super market and more within 3 mins walking distance.

Apart from this, I like the whole neighbourhood feeling where we get to know our neighbours and make friends. Although not as amazing as some of the stories I heard about the "Kampong Spirit", I still did make a number of friends who stayed around the area.

I remember my childhood friend who stayed 2 units away from me. We do not study at the same school and in fact we have almost nothing in common besides the fact that we stayed side by side. I would look forward to the playtime when school is over. We would sit along the corridor and show off our newest toys or run around the corridor playing our water gun. And his mum is always so nice and hospitable. She will invite me to her place in case such as me not bringing my keys and my mum is out. HAHA.

Although I'm currently staying with my wife, cats and dog, I really miss those days where I stayed with my mum, dad, brother and sister. No doubt it gives us a lot of privacy but I miss having my family under one roof! But erm.. not the part where my mum nags non-stop. haha.

Parents and Aunt came over for dinner!

Everybody wish to have their "dream" home. It may be a big place, it might end up being a small place. Regardless of whatever type of place you are looking for, I am very sure there is a suitable one for you at iProperty.com.sg!

iProperty.com Singapore is the country’s leading property website. They have the largest database of listings that cover hdb flat, property for rent, private apartments, condos, landed property, commercial property, newly launched projects and even overseas property. Ultimately, they are a smart search engine for property.

So here is my HDB Story. What about yours? Share with us your HDB story here and you get to win something too!! And if you dont' have, you know where to find yours!

Mr.Smith, I LOVE MY HDB! Maybe not the loan. LOL.

EZ-Link ‘Activate!’ programme! Recover your fund from lost ez-link card!

Have you heard of the EZ-Link ‘Activate!’ programme? Taking the public transport is like a daily thing for me but I don’t even know it myself until I saw the AD! I must be too focus on looking at pretty girls on the train. :X

If you’re registered with ‘Activate!’
There are 3 key functions of this programme that you can enjoy:
[It’s a one-time, simple, registration which is absolutely free by the way!]
  •  EZ-Manage
  •  EZ-Protect
  •  EZ-Deals.
Registered ‘Activate!’ ez-link card holders can check the transaction history of their cards for up to three months, block and recover funds should they lose their cards, and enjoy additional protection against unauthorised usage before the lost card is blocked!

EZ-Manage
Have you ever lost your ez-link card right after topping up the value? I’m sure it has happened to some of you! I use to top my up card in small value like $10 - $20 just because I’m afraid of losing a card with high value but that means multiple topping up and wasting so much time!!! I can imagine the fat boy buying food using my high value ez-link card! >:-(
By registering with ‘Activate!’, card holders will be protected by EZ-Manage if they lose or misplace their ez-link cards, meaning they can block further usage by reporting card loss and enjoy the refund of the remaining stored value in the lost card.
Also with EZ-Manage, now I’m able to monitor my transit and retail transaction history up to three months, either at the ‘Activate!’ website or via the EZ-Link mobile app!
EZ-Protect
Should there be unauthorised usage of funds between the time the customer calls EZ-Link to block their card and before the card is successfully blocked (which can take up to 48 hours), EZ-Protect provides an additional safeguard of up to SGD 10, on top of being able to block your EZ-link card and fund recovery. This means that consumers can safely store more value on their cards instead of having to top-up their cards frequently.
In partnership with ACE Insurance, EZ-Protect has a robust system which requires verification of personal details and reinforces security in case someone else picks up the card and tries to make a fraudulent claim.
No more worries about it falling into the hands of those fatty boys! It’s just as safe as a credit card now!

This July & August, to reward registered ‘Activate!’ ez-link cardholders with EZ-Deals:
Most deals come with a price, but not with ‘Activate!’
In the months of July & August 2013, all registered ‘Activate!’ ez-link cardholders stand a chance to have their retail transactions on their registered ez-link cards…
WAIVED FOR THE MONTH! Wow!

Terms and conditions will apply, of course. Details, and Terms & Conditions are found at http://www.ezlinkactivate.com.sg/ez-deals/promotions/
Hurry and register with Activate!, simply visit http://ezlinkactivate.com.sg/
Because there’s really nothing to lose and all to gain!

You can also register via the EZ-Link app available at the iTunes App store for Apple mobile device owners. Google Play Store for Android devices.
* ‘Activate!’ only applies to adult ez-link cards issued by EZ-Link and does not apply to concession cards issued by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Instagram Vs Twitter in Singapore.

One of the many questions that my friends like to ask me cause I am the "Social Media Guru" to them. They like to ask me question about different platforms like what is Path, what is Weibo, what is Plurk and so on and so on and what is the major difference. If everything is about Social and sharing and showing and telling, why do we need so many platforms?

My answer is simple, it's like language, it's like showing love, everyone has to find their own poison.

And the next question that very commonly raises from the rest will be what makes a platform better than the other? Or a more direct question will be "Is Twitter dying? I don't see a lot active users locally on this platform as compared to Instagram right? Isn't it the same?"

Well, it's same but different. Both Instagram and Twitter allows you share both text and pictures but what is the major differences?

To help layman out of this, I have this mantra

"Twitter's primary function allows mainly 140 characters while Instagram is to tell a thousand words."

And now with Instavideo function you simply tell people almost a million words with one upload. (Depending on the frame per seconds but you get the drift.

So there you go, I've told you the difference between the two functions but what makes the main difference in attracting crowd? Why are there more active users on Instagram locally > Twitter?

Simply because

"Everyone has something to show but not everyone has something smart to say."

Fact-ed.

Some examples of stupid Tweets I got off the internet which is not local. We know what our mum always tell us, when you have nothing smart or nice to say - don't say. Same advise to these people.

And you know what they say about "If you don't sound good, at least look good." (Actually I just came out with that.) #AsSeenOnInstagram

So why am I not surprised there are more active users on Instagram? You can show your nails, your tits, your shoes, your food, the sky, the sea, the sun and the whole instant gratification with the like function as compared to Twitter where people go "I don't know what to say." "I don't sound interesting." and no likes!

Agree?

Baey Yam Keng - Our Selfie MP.

$

An interesting question came in this morning through my usual instant messenger.

"What do you think about Baey Yam Keng Selfie?"

Your friendly neighbourhood MP!
I mean, am I suppose to have some opinion about it? I mean my colleague showed it to me yesterday and I went,

"Very free hor?"

It set me thinking again. Is it okay? Is it not okay? What are the fundamental "problems"?

I wouldn't say it's bad, I wouldn't it's wrong but I guess it makes a big difference to his image but is it all good? Let me break it down with examples. So being an MP makes you not just a politician but also a public figure for sure and being public figure means you are pretty much a role model. This discussion have been discussed multiple times especially when some teachers are caught doing something and getting themselves onto the New Papers right?

I like and respect how he is using Social Media and new media to bridge the gap between the people and him but frankly the bottomline is "I can't take him seriously anymore.". (I hope it's just me.)

Imagine a scenario of MM, SM or PM doing the same thing? How would that be? You can argue and say that he is not them but what is the difference between the MM, SM and PM and him? They are all public figures and politician no? So if it's just the rank that allows people to do different things online, where does that line stop and who is to say what is right or wrong? Time for another guideline by another scholar?

To make things for easy comparison sake, this is the example I came out with.

Friendly Teacher Vs Strict Teacher.

This is a classic example that everyone should have at least encounter once or at least watched about this one TV.

The old and strict teacher is less popular in school but she command more "respect" and have a better maintained classroom. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that her kids are the smartest or produce better academic results but one thing for sure, better discipline. At that age, maybe not so mature yet and can't handle "self-discipline" that well yet.

On the other hand, we have the younger, bubbly and popular teacher. She don't command that much respect but maybe more well liked and loved but more often than not, classic example shows that her class is noisier and less organized. I wouldn't jump into conclusion that the kids don't respect her or wouldn't do her work and climb over her head but I am sure we heard one of these conversations before,

"Mrs Tan (Older teacher) home work forget to do!! Die ah. Later get scolded. Better do now." and "Ms Cindy's (The younger teacher) homework forget to do sia. Aiya, nvm lah. She very nice one. Later I tell her forget and maybe I hand in tomorrow."

So it's a fact that we get different result but the variable here is that the result varies from individual audience. So who is a better leader or teacher? It depends on the audience I guess. And are Singaporean ready to have such freedom and "self-discipline" to accept and work with a MP who is more ground level? You know the answer better.

Is doing less means more these days for us as a nation? Are we ready for freedom and making decisions for ourselves? Do we really comprehend liberty like the western countries? Do you want to live in a place where we can have our flags as fashion accessories, your kid calling your name instead of calling you dad, high divorce rate and you can walk around with a pistol and calling it self defense? I am not saying that these are the definite by-products but I am saying these are the differences and possible scenario. Are you ready?

I guess the bottom-line goes down this;

Are we ready to sacrifice one thing for another?

In his (Baey) case maybe a little power distance for closer relationship. Is this what works best for him as a MP? Are people going to feel it and work closer to him because he is friendly or will people take advantage of him or can't take him seriously?

Full story from ST.com.

Mr.Smith, I want to be a politician one day but I don't think Google agrees.

LIM PEH: Basically means "Your Father" in Hokkien. And in context - it also means your father.

That being said, we don't use it in a sentence like;

"Please pass it to lim peh."

It is normally used to describe oneself.

"Lim peh tell you hor."

Lim Peh act work by SKLO
Anyway, it's time to support local talent again! Always been a hiphop rapper person and this song didn't fail to impress me at all. It's by local talent Shigga Shay and once again feat the currently very popular ABTM - Tosh. (Is he like everywhere or everywhere?)

And my favorite part of the lyrics:

Don't think we Singaporean obey everything blindly
We don't say "okay"to everything the government says
Times have changed, we are not the same

That is the reason why I like hip hop and why I like underground music. It's not just music but it's a voice. It's getting people to listen to what they have to say. Talking about society, talking about things they disagree just like LMF.

Mr.Smith, RESPECT LIM PEH.

You've got a tattoo so you must be a bad guy.

According to the internet, Tattoos goes way back in the history almost for 5,000 years. In the history, people around Asia, Europe started having tattoos for various reasons. The identity, tribes even with the ability to bless someone but what happened to tattoos these days? Is that the primary "function"?
I've always wanted to get a package tattoo sleeve or two like the ones Beckham does. What stopped me? Simply because I am no celebrity, NBA player, Hip Hop star or "Bad guy". Simply because I am a normal office worker and it seems to be that people still judges people with tattoos. A stigma that still sticks in people's head - having tattoo makes you a "bad person" and you ain't gonna get a proper job. Or so they said.

How did we ended up where we are today where there is this stigma that we are "bad guy" cause we got inked. Not too sure where went wrong along the line of this art with a long historical background. Maybe it was the Yazuka or more lightly it was the Chinese secret society when they first came to Singapore. The need of identity, sticking together watching each other's back to make sure they didn't get bullied.
Family Picture of Yazuka from Reddit
Is that so or is it simply what the media is showing? The whole bad boy image when you have tattoos?
It is obvious that I disagree with this statement considering the fact that I love tattoos and I have tattoos

Really, what is bad about Tattoo?
So why am I so troubled about this? The pain, the agony of why people is judging tattoos. It sure isn't something everyone can do and anyone can just pickup. To me it's an art, it's something that I use to express myself, something that tells a story, symbolises something and reminds me of something. Something very dear that I want to keep it with me and what is wrong with doing that? We ain't in the 1940s.

Depp says it well and says it right.
It might be me, it might be the society and it might be the people around me, I don't know. I know I want one but I guess I'm just not ready or I'm not wanting it THAT badly as of now because I know myself. If I want it, I will do it and nobody can stop me.

Signing off with this Song by Bon Jovi - Good guys don't always wear white. Having ink doesn't make you bad and not having it doesn't makes you good either. - DON'T JUDGE.

I see them in your eyes...

Good guys don't always wear white
Good guys don't always wear white"

The final chapter of Singapore's greatest duet - Kambing Duos.
This is Eunice Tan. My colleague for the last year and today is her last day at work.
Us working together.
I've never liked her when I first met her at some events years before we became colleagues. She gave people me the feeling that she is snobbish, atas, spoilt and everyone else is not good enough for her. Seriously, I don't know how I got those impressions of this woman considering the fact that I didn't even say much to her at the beginning. I guess it was the "look on her face."

What happened next? We started working together for almost a year and I must say I love this woman, just as much as I hate her. LOL. I love her because she is one crazy woman. I spent so much time in the office rushing campaigns and getting things live online together, scratching each other's back. I spent more time talking to her than I spent time talking to my mum or wife. There is no reason why I wouldn't fall in love with a fun loving lady and pretty woman like her. She will always entertain me regardless of what it is and my favourite joke on her is about her being single and I guess appearing on most of my pictures online didn't help.
We photobomb-ing people together.
This ain't exactly a picture with her but I still like it. I like how I get to tease and disturb her all day long.
And we PARTEHHHHH
And she entertains me.
We share lot of common interest like how much we love ourselves, how shameless we are and how we enjoy watching America comedy like 2 Broke Girls, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory. We like pretty things and she spent a lot of time telling me gossips about her friends, so if you are her friend and you are reading this, I probably knows your dirty secrets as well. LOL.
Us buying Hello Kitty Tikam!
Regardless of how much you love someone, there must be something you hate about her. We spent so much time screaming at each other in the office over the smallest thing like how some of the things should be or should not but that's all work. The real reason? She never ever wants to walk out for lunch! SHE IS THE LAZIEST LUNCH PERSON EVER!

BUT, in her defence, she makes me nice looking sandwiches for lunch.

I will surely miss this crazy woman in the office and I don't know how to say how much I will miss her so I shall dedicate some of our favoUrite songs to her.

She knew I was trouble...

It's not me, it's you... The one who got away...

She really didn't have to cut me off...but...

We ain't broken just bent... We can learn to love again?

Nevermind I will find someone like you...

Starships are meant to fly and you are meant for a bigger sky...

AYAM, Titanium... Oh wait, this one has no link, I just thought it's funny. HAHA.

Whatever the case is, I wish her all the best and may the force be with Eun.

Mr. Smith, looking for a new duet partner.

Angels... You are my angel.

When I was younger, I believe that this is how angels should look like. Comes with Halo, wings and most likely in white.

I started playing Magic The Gathering and I was pretty sure this is the meaning of Angel.

Still white, comes with wings, no halo and a lot of jugs. One of the best white card one could have in his deck back in those days.

Soon puberty hit me and hit me hard. And this was Angel to me.

As compared to Serra, still white, full tits, blonde, hot but no wings, no sword and definitely not just a 4.

As years goes by, we will notice that there will be people around you that give you a lift when needed, push you down and throw stones at you at the least expected moments. Some call them friends, some call those enemies but I choose to call them Angels.

Everyone is an Angel.

Angels come in every form, shape, sizes, age, sex or no sex. Everyone that comes into your life one way or the other, regardless of staying of leaving you is an angel. Why? Because they touched your life one way or the other. Taking it positively will just make you better.

There are angels that came into my life and messed it up. Pull me down, break me up and took everything from me. I learnt, I got wiser, I grow up better and I am now stronger. There are angels who came in my life, gave me love and shower me with care and stand by me. Trust me, believe me and allow me to grow. I always say this about myself, I am not the most thoughtful friend, I don't remember your birthday and very likely too lazy to call and talk to you but I am blessed this way that people around me love me and accept me for who I am. Some stayed, some did their part and left me, distanced but not forgotten for sure. You guys know who you are.

The Origin

Everyone came from heaven, a place where everyone was an angel. We are came down to earth or where we are to touch each other again. To complete each other's journey, to experience love, joy, pain. The love of having. The joy of getting and the pain of parting. When we truly experience all the things that we are required to experience again, we leave our body and we return to the land of angels to carry on our life in true form.

They come in different forms and when you least expect.  Some was given to you the moment you see light. Your parents, your family. Some come in as part of the plan, your neighbours, your schoolmates, your colleagues. Come just pop in accidentally around the corner from the internet, your friends' friend or maybe just a stranger you see on bus daily. We have no idea how big a smallest action from one can impact another.

You are an Angel too

We might not have voice of Michael Jackson to heal the world, we might not be the GOAT on the basketball court to change others' life and we do not need to have the Hand of God to make history. A true heart filled with passion and love. Love for yourself and the community. Doing great and greater starting with the people beside you to a bigger world out there. Every action courts.

 I hope...

I haven't been the best person I could have been but I hope you can call me your angel. I hope I've touched your life some how in one way or the other. I wish you live long and prosper.

"Man's greatest motivation in life is Fear and Greed."

According to Phil Jackson's book "Sacred Hoops", that is what his CEO of Chicago Bulls believe. And how true is that and how untrue is that?

Being a marketing and advertising person, it's not uncommon that we try to go into the head of our target and think from their perspective. How will I make them buy my product? How will I make them join my contest? Basically, what are the consumers' behavior towards our product. We might not be psychiatrist but we do spend a lot of time doing that and sometimes the answer we get is pretty good. So how often do we use greed and fear to motivate them and does it work?

Fear

Honestly, this use to be my bread and butter as a sales man selling events and planning services. We will always make event planning sounds so difficult. The trouble of getting the right licensing for the right kind of show. PELU, Compass, NEA, BCA, SPF and many more. It is so mind blowing that the client will say it in his mind "Wah, so many things to do just for a roadshow? Damn, I always thought I just need some girls in bikinis to give away my flyers." Thanks to all these ruling in Singapore, it makes events planning kinda intimidating and that's where I come in to help you with getting the paper work done and best of all we do it all the time and it is like a snap of a fingers to me.

I guess it works the same for many other sales man from insurance to the guy who sells magic mop or some super sharp knives or even the property agent. One of the classic would be " I've got another person viewing this unit too. So let me know if you are interested else the other person might want to put the down payment 1st." Tar dar. And more often than not people fall into such "motivational traps". All you need is someone to push you over the top on saying yes.

Greed

Looking at this two motivational source, they sounded more like vice and sins to me than anything else and the bad news is that they are something that I work around.

How do I use greed? Familiar with these terms?

"50% Discount"
"Was $299 now $149 ONLY"
"Buy 1 get 1 free"
"LIKE MY FACEBOOK PAGE AND GET A FREE APPLE PIE!"

So I guess that rest are self-explanatory isn't it. Greed has always been the easiest form of motivation even in day to day case. "I buy you lunch if you...." "I give you this if you...." And our basic performance bonuses, year end bonus and what not bonuses at work. But are all this monetary bonus something that keep people in companies and making them happy and work in 100% effort or even 110% effort?

Zen master says...
it's love and community. That is what Phil Jackson believes. He believes that the power of community and love beats Greed and Fear anytime. And he wrote that book in the 90s. And do you know what he just said? He just pointed out at us the beauty of social media - which is Love and Community.

Community and Love

The best motivation as pointed out by Phil. Greed and Fear and only bring you this far but a good community brings you further. This is what social media is. Viral. How someone shares something and everyone else buy. The logic of why we prefer to read blogs and try things that are being talked about online. The community. The basic logic of "when everyone is trying it out, it can't be wrong." The Love when your friends ask you to do things as a team when you feel accepted as something as a team - Oneness.

I remember how I spent my money like water thanks to community love. Forums. I used to collect toys, I still do but not as crazy and how did things got out of hand? Mass orders at forum, people sharing what they just gotten and what is a must buy. You have no idea how many of those toys I got just because everyone else has it and sometimes because they needed one more person to buy as a group before they deliver it to Singapore.

How did some girls start losing weight on internet? The motivation of community. Challenging each other who loses more, the comments on Instagram that goes "Looking good XXXX".

How did some people started cycling. running or any other form of hobbies? The power of community. Word of mouth. And this is exactly how Facebook and other platforms are doing it isn't it? Sharing the latest food or the latest happenings.

In a good office environment, we have heard something like this too often, "The job sucks but a job is just a job and having good colleagues is important and make things worth it. We laugh and cry together as a team." That is always why HR experts always stress on the importance of team building, company trips, dinners and dance which will allow organization to create better results. It's not just about another day running under the sun trying to find clues or doing trust falls. Those are just activities to help speed up community building. Solving problems together, achieving something as a team. These rewards are priceless and it is something that will keep building. And this is the power of community and love.

So what is your motivation? Choose your poison.

Mr.Smith, come come, kor kor give you love.

I didn't believe.

When I was younger, I didn't believe.

I didn't believed that everyone can have the same opportunity to break thru. I had dreams. I thought it would be cool to be a celebrity, artitist, band member or a sports man but I didn't believed it's possible.

I was born in the 80s and to me Singaporean will never be able to earn money from this way. I had a dad who didn't know how to express himself or show us any concern or care. He wasn't a role model in any way I wanted less say an inspiration.

I have a brother who love us so deary that sacrifice his dreams, talent and freedom for the our living hood.

I have a mum who struggle all her life to keep us contented and taken care of in her greatest means. What more can 1 ask for?

I did not have the chance to be like any of the kids these days that grew up in taking 101 enrichment classes. Not just because we weren't well off but also because I wasn't interested. I didn't believed that putting in 10,000 hours will make a difference. All I cared about was having fun. I didn't see things like how I am looking at them now. I didn't believe that opportunity is just 1 step away. All you have to do is step forward.

I didn't believed that hardwork can overcome the lack of talent. I hated talented people. I hate the fact that they can do things so much easier as compared to the rest. But I grow up to understand that talent can bring you some where but without the 10,000 hours, talent can only bring you this far. Talent + 10,000 hours put you above all but 10,000 hours beats talent with no hardwork.

It might be hard to believe but I didn't grow up a confident kid. I didn't grow up like who I am now. I feel out of place most of the time because I wasn't talent in any sports or art and physically I was a chubby little kid. My only born talent was talking. So I started talking and I didn't stop. I talked to impress, talked to hide my fear, hide my weakness and talk my way into and out of trouble. I've talked all my life and as time goes by I got so good at it that's all I do and I just kept doing it since I'm good.

From hindsight, there's a lot more I could have done or tried if I had believed. I wouldn't say it's too late considering I am just turning 30 but losing the teenage years where development was the easiest makes thing difficult to catchup. Then again, I might not be who I am, doing what I am doing or be at where I am if I've done anythings differently. Can I say that I've any regret? I am not too sure since I am pretty contented with where I am currently. I guess being contented is the key to happiness after all.
I guess 6 rings is enough.
Kids these days are lucky. Opportunities are all around us and it's seriously just a step away. We have talent contest, online platform and all sort of other possibilities that we can't even imagine. Always believeand try. As for parents, my advice is to let the kids do what they like, don't force them to be the lawyer or doctor.

Signing off with one of my current ear worm: 10,000 hours.
